Floating on hot air…

“Here are my questions: In 1970, when environmentalists were making predictions of manmade global cooling and the threat of an ice age and millions of Americans starving to death, what kind of government policy should we have undertaken to prevent such a calamity? When Ehrlich predicted that England would not exist in the year 2000, what steps should the British Parliament have taken in 1970 to prevent such a dire outcome? In 1939, when the U.S. Department of the Interior warned that we only had oil supplies for another 13 years, what actions should President Roosevelt have taken? Finally, what makes us think that environmental alarmism is any more correct now that they have switched their tune to manmade global warming?” — Walter Williams

And an apt set of questions it is.

I am amazed at the capacity of my fellow citizens for celebrity-sponsored alarmism. For the amount of earth history we actually have recorded, humankind as a whole is rather clueless regarding the true patterns of earth’s ecosystem. Especially when you consider that the bogeyman they’ve predominantly provided as the cause – carbon dioxide – is food for the greenery, and its production by man is scant when compared to that produced by Mother Nature herself.

And I’m just dying to hear them explain away the degree or two decrease in the earth’s average temperature last year.

Just why are we so eager to listen to politicians and movie stars on such matters? These folks may be brilliant at their chosen craft, but show me one – one! – who has the credentials to analyse the current climate and evidence of past climate changes, and then predict future trends? Gore? Not him – he was too busy inventing the internet to have paid much attention to anything like climatology!

It is important to note that those who are driving our industry and economy into the depressed cesspool of “environmental correctness” represent a very small percentage of the citizenry of the US of A. They are a faction, people. And a faction can be defined as a small group within a population holding a belief or view counter to that of the majority. History shows that these factions normally force their issues to the detriment of all. Special interest groups, lobbyists, activists, “environmentalists” – call them what you may. And our wholesome media is part and parcel of most of them, presenting the factious view as if it were both fact and consistent with the popular view.

Wake up and smell the toast burning – before it’s too late.

And, today, here’s the kicker: The National Climate Data Center reports that we have just exited the COLDEST April in over ten years – the 29th coldest since they began recording data 114 years ago! The average temperature of this past April was one degree colder than the average April temperatures of the entire 20th century. That’s the average temperature (if you are not statistically versed, please crease your brow, cup your chin in your hand, nod and say “Mmmmm”. That way, we won’t be able to tell you from people who are.) There was more snow on the Eurasian land mass than has been seen since they began taking such data.

That all absorbed now? You Nodded your head and said “Mmmmmm”? Good. Here comes the “punch line”: The arctic ice, which recedes in the summer and expands in the winter every year went from 13 million square km down to only 3 million during last year’s warm months (a cycle called “the seasons”; the warm part being commonly referred to as “summer”). “Oh! The poor little polar bears!”, our friends who would influence The Hill screeched. “They must be protected!” And now, as the Department of The Interior will announce later today: they are. Polar bears have been added to the “threatened species” list by the intelligentsia of the Department of the Interior reacting to the whiny screeches of the special interest groups – FACTIONS! – who find such things intriguing.

Wait! It gets better! Had they settled back to watch, they might have seen the arctic ice recover to 14 million square kilometers after this cold, cold winter. At the end of winter 2007, the ice cover around the Bering Strait and Alaska was at the highest level ever recorded.

That’s right – our government is now engaged in protecting the polar bear from an increase in its environment.

Bravo. Just freakin’ marvelous. Some day, a thousand years down the road, our descendants are going to look back at us and just shake their heads in disbelief…

I was searching for information about \’Department Of The Interior\’, and this your page (\’Floating on hot air…\’) was in search results. Not sure why it appeared, but your site is still interesting to read 🙂

Thanks! I think it appeared because “department of interior” appears twice, once in the quoted material, and once in mine – well, now it appears four times – your comment and mine 🙂

This man, just like the recently tasnrformed Newt Gingrich, has been at the center of information for most of his adult life. All of these guys are just now realizing that they think that they may have made as mistake . The man can’t even say; “I made a mistake!” He “thinks” they “may” have made a “mistake”. Amazing! If this man was a rock in the current he would be sandstone. It is also amazing how many of these people have come to new insights regarding the green movement and AGW. I wonder what final piece of scientific information convinced ALL of them after all of this time? Wait..wait..I know. They have all been reading the polls. After all….statistics is considered a science….isn’t it? Then again it is referred to as the “arcane” science so it is a good thing he hedged his statement. After all the “science” may change with next week’s poll.
